Gulmarg Gondola 2026: Phase 1 vs Phase 2, Timings, High Altitude Tips & Avoiding Scams

Everything you need to know about booking tickets on the world’s second highest cable car, slot timings, weather holds, and official portal procedures.

### Why Gulmarg Gondola is Legendary Built in joint collaboration between the Jammu & Kashmir Government and the French engineering firm Pomagalski, the Gulmarg Gondola is an icon of world adventure. Ascending from the pine bowl of Gulmarg resort at 2,650 meters to the snow crest of Apharwat Peak at nearly 4,000 meters, it carries skiers, trekkers, and vacationers across dramatic Himalayan heights. ### Phase 1 vs Phase 2: Which One to Book? - **Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori):** Starts at 2,650 m and climbs to 3,050 m. Journey time is approximately 9 minutes. At Kongdoori meadow, you will find snow activities in winter, open meadows in summer, small tea stalls, and gentle slopes suitable for families with toddlers and senior citizens. - **Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak):** Ascends from 3,050 m all the way to 3,980 m. Here, perennial snowpacks exist even into late June. The air is thinner and noticeably colder. You are treated to jaw-dropping panoramas extending to Nanga Parbat (the world's 9th highest peak) on crisp cloudless mornings. - **Recommendation:** If travelling with able-bodied adults and older kids, booking **both Phase 1 + Phase 2** is strongly recommended for the complete high-altitude experience. ### Official Booking Rules & Ticket Costs 1. **Never buy physical tickets from touts:** Counter tickets on the spot have been **strictly discontinued**. All booking happens exclusively through the official J&K Cable Car ticketing portal. 2. **Current Regulated Tariffs:** - Phase 1: ₹810 per adult round trip - Phase 2: ₹1,050 per adult round trip (requires valid Phase 1 ticket) - Children under 3 years travel free (valid birth proof required) 3. **Advance Slot Availability:** Tickets open approximately 2 to 4 weeks in advance and sell out within minutes during peak summer (April-June) and winter ski season (December-February). Plan your trip early. ### Altitude Sickness & Cold Weather Gear At 3,980 meters on Apharwat Peak, atmospheric pressure drops noticeably. - Drink plenty of water before boarding. Avoid heavy oily meals right before ascending. - Walk slowly at Phase 2; avoid running or sudden jumping. - Even in June, temperature at Apharwat can hover between 4°C and 8°C with biting wind chills. Carry insulated windproof jackets, thermal gloves, and polarized sunglasses to prevent snow blindness. ### Weather Delays & Refund Policies The cable car operator prioritizes visitor safety above all else. High-velocity winds or technical lightning warnings can cause operations to be paused momentarily or suspended for the day. In the event of an official closure, tickets are refunded back to the original payment method by the Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation.
